Why any new SNS site becomes so popular

Social Networking Service (SNS) as I knew started off in a big way with Orkut, then moving on to Facebook, Indyarocks and a few more. Other genres in the SNS scenarios are LinkedIn- Professional Networking and Twitter- MicroBlogging, to name a few. We have seen how popular FB is and how fast it became that what it is today. Fb achieved that level of usage and popularity as Orkut in about half the time. And a recent article in a reputed magazine reports Google+ users as a little over 3 million in a few weeks after launch, 20 million in the first month and over 25 million a few weeks later. So, it would only be logical in saying that a(any) new SNS would become very successful provided it is competent enough in the primary criteria (looks, ease of use, features etc.). One other noteworthy revelation is the demography of users in the SNS and how it is evolving. Primarily, that concerns the ratio of men to women; also it may deal with the age groups of the people registering and ne

Perseverence Pays!

"Many of life's failures are people who didnot know how close they were to success when they gave up." -Thomas Alva Edison True indeed.. After working for 10 hours trying to fix a connection problem in my program, I almost gave up.... I kept at it, and 1 hr later I found the fix... And all the trouble vanished in a moment... Giving up is a simple, temporary solution to problems but it is Persistence that pays in the end...

Google+ SNS

Old wine in a new bottle.. G+ is just that. My reasons of saying so: 1- G+ has The look of Orkut beta, layout of fb, similar features.. the names are different though.. 2- Not many new things, perhaps they haven't included many things in it yet.. And the bad part is, G+ hogs bandwidth.. it ain't for people with slow internet connections.. But the good news is that G+ works pretty well on my Android phone and a 2G GPRS internet.. its pretty faster than the fb android app.. But Do we really need another SNS when we have so many already? One that offers many new stuff?

When to give up?

Trying to set up a database server for 5 hours on a Saturday night... Is it wise, in the first place? And is 5 hours too long to be trying it? Would it have been better to let go of it and get some help later? There is only a fine line between perseverance and foolish stubbornness.. But we are human, after all.. and it is so very easy to miss out the difference...

The life of IT programmers

In one sentence: "People who worked their ass off everyday for years were called bonded labour once upon a time.. Now, they are IT employees" One of my friends said that a while ago.. Of course, this is an over-statement, but it is quite true in many cases, particularly if you don't put a deliberate effort to break free and put some life into your days. And by a twist of fate, I am in the same stupid mess now... But why the heck do we need to work so hard? What is the morbid compulsion that we push ourselves too far? and ultimately, What do we stand to gain- short term and long term? - if at all we do gain anything..
